Design Review Panel CPD / Training Day Salisbury 2019

The Design Review Panel were delighted to hold a CPD / training day in Salisbury on the 29th October 2019.
The fully booked event was held at the White Hart in Salisbury. The day included an introduction on the Design Review Panel process by the Design Review Panel vice Chair, Graham Devine of LHC. This was followed by presentations from four excellent speakers. The speakers included:-

Jenny Clifford (Head of Planning, Economy & Regeneration at Mid Devon District Council), & Paul Brockway (Director at Hyas Associates), whose talk was entitled: 'Local Authority Viewpoint - The importance of good design in the planning process'

Dr Matt Cowley ( Director at EAD Ecology) whose talk was entitled: 'Ecology in Planning & Place Making'
Following these three excellent speakers and before lunch was served, there was an introduction to a mock design review panel session, that was to be undertaken in the afternoon, using a project that had previously been reviewed by The Design Review Panel.
After lunch a presentation entitled "Local Authority Design Guides in Planning" was given by David Hawes (Urban Designer & Director at DHUD) introducing local authority design guides and preparing delegates for the afternoon design workshop sessions.
Delegates then took part in a workshop session, undertaking the role of a Panel in groups, focusing on different aspects of a scheme, using the design guides.

The Design Review Panel were delighted to hold a CPD / workshop day in Taunton on the 2nd October 2018
The fully booked event was held at the Somerset County Cricket Ground in Taunton. The day included an introduction on the Design Review Panel process by the Design Review Panel Manager, Jonathan Braddick. This was followed by three excellent speakers, who spoke to their experiences regarding Garden Towns and also gave a different perspective on the benefits of an independent, multidisciplinary Design Review Panel. Following these three excellent speakers and before lunch was served, there was an introduction to a mock design review panel session, that was to be undertaken in the afternoon, using a project that had previously been reviewed by The Design Review Panel.
After lunch delegates were shown a presentation of the mock design reveiw panel session scheme by David Drummond (Architect & Director at Reed Holland Architects & Designers)
Delegates then took part in a workshop session, undertaking the role of a Panel in groups, focusing on different aspects of the scheme. David then, bravely, made himself available to answer questions, as if at a real session.
Following the discussion exercises and mock design review panel session, David Drummond and the local authority case officer Gareth Clifford revealed how the scheme had benefited from engagement with the Design Review Panel when it had been submitted to the Panel and subsequently the planning process for real. The day concluded with drinks and canapes.

The fully booked event was held in the Southernhay Mercure in Exeter. The day included a brief introduction on the Design Review Panel process by the Design Review Panel Manager, Jonathan Braddick. The Design Review Panel Exeter Launch Event

The Devon Design Review Panel launch event took place on Wednesday 25th September 2013, at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in Exeter.
The launch event was extremly well attended with around 60 delegates in attendance. The event included an introduction by Andy Robbins, the Development Manager at Exeter City Council, who introduced the Design Review Panels and the great benefit that they will provide to local authorities and applicants throughout Devon and Somerset and across the South West. The Design Review Panels have initially been established with the support of 11 Local Authorities across Devon and Somerset, although additional local authorities are welcome to apply to participate. The presentation by Andy Robbins was followed by a presentation on the new local Design Review Panels, by Architect Jonathan Braddick, this was inturn followed by a lively question and answer session.
The evening concluded with a champage drinks reception.
The event was attended by construction industry professionals from a wide range of professions, Planning Officers, Councillors and developers.
The new panel was extremely well received by all in attendance with the first panel session in Devon scheduled for early November 2013.
The Design Review Panel Somerset Launch Event
23rd September 2013
The very well received Somerset Design Review Panel launch event took place on Monday 23rd September 2013, at the Somerset County Cricket Ground in Taunton.
The launch event included an introduction by Tim Burton, the Planning & Development Manager at Taunton Deane Borough Council, exploring the background to design review in a historic and national context and explaining the need for local authorities to provide access to local design review in the context of the NPPF.
Tim also set out the aspirations of Taunton Deane Borough Council in regard to an independent design review process and the benefits that the Somerset Design Review Panel represents for local authorities across the South West.
This was followed by a presentation on the new Design Review Panel, by Architect Jonathan Braddick, followed by a question and answer session.
The evening concluded with a drinks reception.
The event was attended by construction industry professionals from a wide range of professions, Planning Officers, Councillors and developers.
The new panel was extremely well received by all in attendance with the first panel session in Somerset scheduled for the 14th November 2013.
The Design Review Panel Plymouth Launch Event
17th September 2013
The hugely successful, fully booked, launch of the Plymouth Design Review Panel took place on Tuesday 17th September 2013 in the Commercial Atrium of Mills Bakery in the Royal William Yard in Plymouth.
The launch event formed part of the RIBA Plymouth Branch AGM and included an introduction by Peter Ford, Head of Development Management at Plymouth City Council, a presentation on the new Design Review Panel by Architect Jonathan Braddick, followed by a question and answer session.
The evening concluded with a drinks reception.
The event was attended by Panel Members, from a wide range of professions, Planning Officers and Plymouth City Councillors. The new panel was extremely well received by all in attendance with the first panel session scheduled for late October 2013.
