Arun Baybars
Architect
Arun is an experienced and imaginative architect living and working in London. He enjoys complex problem solving, and the novel and nuanced solutions that challenging sites and briefs can give rise to. As a designer, he believes in the importance of basic principles: scale and proportion, high quality materials, well-functioning living spaces, ample and well-judged use of daylighting, the art of designing social spaces, and finessing the boundaries between public and private realms.
Through many years working on the later construction stages of large and sometimes demanding projects Arun has developed strong technical skills and an eye for what is likely to be achievable or successful as a detailed finished piece of architecture.
While his experience has been focussed on medium to large scale residential architecture, it has included other building types and uses such as co-living, light industrial, schools, and at one point, a foreign consulate. He has led residential projects varying in scale from 65 to 364 units for clients including Poplar Harca, Countryside Properties, A2Dominon, Ecoworld, Octavia Housing Association, and the London Borough of Hackney. Most recently he led the team working on the planning submission for Westminster City Council’s first Passivhaus social housing scheme.
Arun is involved in organising internal design and technical reviews of projects within his office, and until the first lockdown had begun to participate as a visiting critic at Westminster University for both second year architecture students and with the Designing Cities course (a course aimed at careers in urban design and planning.)
He have always been fascinated by the diversity of London as a collection of distinct neighbourhoods rich in character, and by its huge wealth in the diversity of its residents, and the life, culture and identity they have brought to the city. This and the layers of history that are visible in its streets, obvious and discreet, and the fact that it is a green, people-friendly, but also bustling and dynamic city make it a place he really loves.
