David Wallace Mathewson
Urban Designer
A specialist in urban design, master planning, urban regeneration, strategic and regional planning, David has worked within the built environment profession for more than 17 years on projects scattered across the globe, in developed and developing world contexts where sites are highly constrained by existing conditions or in cities faced with severe urban development challenges. His projects have encompassed a variety of scales from bespoke, high-end residential projects to large-scale master plans housing hundreds of thousands of inhabitants. In his consultancy work, he has collaborated with a number of consultancies, NGOs and inter-governmental bodies, including Perkins+Will, Stitch Studio, Design Council Cabe, DfID (UK), the Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility, DFAT (Australia), the Indonesia Infrastructure Initiative, the Max Lock Centre & the World Bank. David has taught in the MA International Planning & Sustainable Development, MA Urban Design, MA Urban & Regional Planning, the BA (Honours) Designing Cities and BA (Honours) Property in Planning at the University of Westminster in London for the past four years, teaching in lecturing on urban design and strategic planning, international development in Indonesia and Nigeria (places he has worked extensively) and planning policy and development guidance. David was previously a visiting lecturer at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) BArch professional architecture programme in New York City from 2005-2006. Since January 2016 David has also been pursuing doctoral research on the influences of flooding on urban morphology and development patterns in South and Southeast Asian cities. This research is fully funded by the Department of Planning and Transport at the University of Westminster. David is also an award-winning artist who specialises in hand drawings of urban and architectural contexts in pen, pencil and charcoal, as well as oil painting, plaster and clay sculpture, and photography.
