James McKechnie
Transportation Planning Director
James is a Director at Vectos, part of SLR. He has been responsible for a wide range of transport planning projects across the UK on a variety of schemes including large urban extensions. He has grown development planning teams in two leading consultancies, as well as having worked within the public sector both directly and as a consultant. He is highly regarded within the industry, having won a National Transport Award, Michelmores Property Awards, and a shortlisting in the New Civil Engineer Innovation Awards. He is commonly appointed to unlock ‘stalled’ sites, or to seek solutions on projects which others have not been able to progress due to design, policy, land ownership or viability issues.
James represents the Transportation Development Planning sector on National Highways’ Sustainable Development Steering Group. He is well respected for his expert-witness work, usually at planning and CPO Inquiries, and enjoys strong links with leading planning barristers.
James is at the forefront of ‘designing for the future’ cross-discipline initiatives and thought-leadership work in relation to placemaking / future-proofing developments and the wider public realm. James’ work has included technical leadership on Urban Extension and Town Centre Masterplans, Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs), and the assessment / design of new communities (including new town projects). He has also led projects connected with the assessment and specification of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging in the UK and overseas, as well as advising on the design implications of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs).
